bemix Supported Interns Learn Life-Saving Skills

Students from our Canterbury Supported Internship had an inspiring and practical learning experience this week when Babs Dixon from the British Red Cross visited to deliver a first aid workshop.

The two-hour workshop gave students a chance to learn and practise essential first aid skills in a supportive, hands-on setting. Babs guided everyone through CPR and the use of a defibrillator, as well as how to recognise and respond to common injuries and emergencies.

These are real-world skills that help people feel confident and prepared if they ever need to help someone in an unexpected situation, whether at home, work or out in the community.

During the session, students had the opportunity to put their learning into practice, from delivering chest compressions to placing someone into the recovery position - each activity building familiarity and confidence through doing, not just listening.

The class Teacher, Jody, was delighted with the enthusiasm and engagement from the Young People...

"It is brilliant to have outside guests in the classroom, especially when it is a very important skill, such as first aid and how to deal with emergency medical situations.  This is so valuable for the students to have this knowledge"

One of the students, Trixie, reflected on the workshop with enthusiasm:

“The workshop was helpful and fun and if there was an emergency I now have a bit more knowledge.”

Workshops like this do more than teach first-aid techniques; they help students grow in confidence, communication and personal responsibility, all of which are valuable for their ongoing personal development and future employability.

Huge thanks to Babs and the British Red Cross for bringing this interactive session to life, and well done to all the Canterbury interns for diving in and making the most of the experience!
