Supported Employment students in Canterbury recently took part in a valuable learning experience at Canterbury Christ Church University. Alongside people from L'Arche, bemix students met with trainee nurses to help them gain a deeper understanding of how to interact with people with learning disabilities and/or autism.

The session provided a unique opportunity for student nurses to hear directly from people with lived experience. Sitting together in small groups, they shared stories, built connections, and developed a better understanding of what good communication looks like in a healthcare setting.

At the end of the session, some bemix students stepped up to share their feedback with the wider group, reflecting on how they felt the interactions went. It was a great opportunity to highlight what helps make a hospital or medical environment feel more accessible and supportive for people.

Jody and Victoria, bemix Supported Employment Specialists, reflected on how confidently the students shared their personal insights, worked within a new, busy environment, and met new people.

Echo, one of the bemix Supported Employment students, summed up the experience:

“I really enjoyed the event and having the chance to give feedback from my point of view. The nurses I met said that it was really helpful.”

This event was a fantastic way to connect future healthcare professionals with the people they may support - helping to shape an inclusive, understanding healthcare system where everyone can be seen, be heard, and belong.
